history lesson for today...
12.18.03 (10:21 pm)   [edit]

In the eighteen hundreds [western] society was at a rather low point...

if you were not prim and proper, you were either ostrasized, excentric, poor, someone's property [even if it was only for the ten francs that got spat up at your local port brothel] or living a dangerous life in two worlds because the victorians had themselves so repressed and their minds shoved so far up their asses, they were not only dirty, they liked it that way... *snicker* regardless, there was little to pass the time or free oneself from the chains of society...

for england, many found refuge or solace in the opium den... many minds withered away here...
http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/researc h/fales/exhibits/wilde/8o pium.htm" title="http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/researc h/fales/exhibits/wilde/8o pium.htm" target="_blank"http://www.nyu.edu/library/bo...

for an excellent opium den scene you have to watch the opening of "The Shadow" and also "From Hell" where yes, the wonderous Mr. Depp is teamed up with Robbie Coltrane trying to solve and save the victims of Jack the Ripper.. the plots well rounded, but ties into my New Quintology as well, these movies should be watched in this sequence:

Book I "The Brotherhood of the Wolf": where a specialist is called in to deal with the legend of the werewolf, but uncovers an evil god worshipping cult.
Book II "Sleepy Hollow": the young victorian officer learns his skills in a small town.
Book III "From Hell": an older more jaded and trained detective solves the murders and mystery of Jack the Ripper, which was all a big cover by the freemasons, again the god cult.
Book IV "Eyes Wide Shut": skip to the modern world where a normal doctor encounters the god cult in the present day.
Book V "The Ninth Gate" where the reincarnated detective [Depp] Returns at a rare book dealer that finds himself dealing with the cult again, [please exclude the pointless sex scene with the devil or whatever that topless chic was, it didn't serve the movie any justice]

back to that history lesson...

so in these hard victorian times, the english mostly decided to send themselves into oblivion by lying down dead..

the French on the other hands knew how to party themselves to death...
by mixing a splendid liquor with with a poisonous halucinagenic, they created absinthe...
the green fairy [kylie manogue anyone?] on the bottle took you where you wanted to go..
cool site http://www.absintheamerica.co...

the bane of many impressionist artists of the late nineteen hundreds...
latrec, van goh, did unspeakable horrors to others and themselves all in the name of art and love...
destroyed by absinthe...

I've discovered most of my artistic heroes were womanizing drunkards... or brooding loners...
no wonder I'm so 'speacial'

man, why can't I be more like that?

Speaking of the French and liquor.. there is a drink called Chartreuse [for those that have read "lost souls?" by Poppy Z Brite, you know about it, for those of you that ever came near my apartement probably smelled it] It is sweet and sticky, burns like brandy, and is so minty it will clear you lungs free of debris... Chartruse has been made by a sect of French Monks for over nine hundred years [ http://www.chartreuse.fr/pa_s... ] "Only three monks know the identity of the 130 plants, how to blend them and how to distill them. "

so I'm at my birthday party two years ago with thirty or so people coming and going... there are stupid moments, brave moments, or just sad moments in your life... I prove all three as usual. We decide the beer cups need something more interesting in them.. I don't drink beer any longer, makes me too ill to live, but I drink red wine, vodak/rye/rum based drinks, and pretty much every hard liquor except sambuca [hate liqcorice] mostly bottled something, like scmirnoff Ice... we pull out the chartreuse, and most people can't stand it... then someone pours a quarter cup full of chartruese and the other quarter with Jagermeister [again if you don't know, this is the german cure for the common cold [ http://www.jager.com/ ] and is made from fifty-two different herbs... again strong stout and almost minty with a hint of pain...

so we have this drink... one hundred and eigthy-two herbs in a cup.. to smell it is painful to your shockingly now clear sinuses... its probably flamable near open flame... a few taste it.. others turn away in fear... so I spent the rest of the evening being the only person able to tolerate this insane concoction... it was dubbed "MonkOneEightyTwo" and labled on cup for fear of someone mistaking it for gasoline... I was not terribly out of it the entire nite... up till well past dawn too..

ahhh the good times I have forgotten...
