I'm a little rusty... it sounds norse, but the basilisk is a greek creature noted more so often in the bible stories... thanks for the post cheers +laine+ posted by: irles (reply) post date: 10.13.06 (11:03 am) Lyinghere, unfortunatley Posthumus, Imogen and Iachimo were not exactly mythological characters but rather they belong to ‘Cymbeline’, a play by Shakespeare. During the time of Augustus Caesar, Cymbeline was the King of Britain. He is angry that his daughter Imogen has chosen a poor (but worthy) man for her husband. So he banishes Posthumus, who goes to fight for Rome. Imogen (dressed as a boy) goes in search of her husband, who meanwhile has boasted to his pal Iachimo that Imogen would never betray him. And Iachimo's determined to prove him wrong. But let's talk now about the fascinating basilisk - a real Greek mythlogical animal as you say. This predecessor of the vampire was, originally, a reptile begotten of a cock and a serpent (!), complete barbed tail. Its other name was cockatrice. It suffered seriously from halitosis and its best friends would shrink apprehensively away: its enemies were either withered at a glance or overwhelmed with a breath. It could be as fatal as any blood-sucking vampire. Basiliks were cannon as well as monsters to Shakespeare and Marlowe... But not vampires for me.
